KIRSTEN JOHNSON

I am currently part of the Creative Services team at the Teaching and Learning Centre at Simon Fraser University, working on different educational web projects such as, Investigating Forensics website for the Virtual Museum of Canada, From C to C: Chinese Canadian Stories of Migration website and the Chinese Canadian Stories website. I also independently produce my own media productions and am currently working on my third interactive movie. I have a Master of Arts (2008) degree and a Bachelors of Applied Science (2004) degree from the School of Interactive Arts and Technology at Simon Fraser University.

I have produced two interactive movies, Lost Cause (2007) and Disconnected (2010), and a number of short films. I have recently be nominated for a Leo Award (2011) for Best Picture Editing in a short drama for my editing work on the short film Therapy (2010). My interactive movie Disconnected (2010), is a series of interactive web video chats which allows the viewer to explore conversation in webcam chats between two characters. Disconnected was part of the Women in Film Festival (2010) and was part of the iDMAa IDEAS Digital Narrative exhibition at Emily Carr (2010). Lost Cause (2007) is an interactive film which allows viewers to navigate between the perspectives of three main characters. Lost Cause has been exhibited at the Women in Film Festival (2009), at the ACM International Conference on Multimedia (2008), and was published in the 2007 Philadelphia Conference Issue of The Journal of the International Digital Media and Arts Association. I have also presented my research on interactive film-making at the Imaging Cinema, India Institute of Technology Madras (2010).

I have also been a Web Designer for Make Believe Media (2009-2011), a Web Developer at TransLink (2008-2009), a Web Co-ordinator for Venture Connection Office at SFU (2008-2010), the Webmaster (2004-2009) at Simon Fraser University, and a Teaching Assistant (2004-2008) at the School of Interactive Arts and Technology for undergraduate courses: Narrative and New Media, Digital Photography, Systems of Media Representation and Moving Images. Prior to web designing and film-making I was interested in fine arts and I painted nature and abstract pieces using acrylic and oil paints. My other interests include traveling, photography, playing guitar and kickboxing.
